You want to hear from friends and family, and when you are at work or working from home, you want to make sure that you get all business communications in a timely manner. These things are what email accounts are for, but because there are some that love to send out spam, you may have a hard time finding the emails that you really want to read. Spam emailers make money annoying you, but there are some things you can do to keep your inbox clean.
Many email providers out there have their own spam filters, though some work better than others. Yahoo and Hotmail each have their own ways of deterring spam, and they work with about the same efficiency. The problem is that spam emailers are always coming up with new ways to get around these filters, and it is hard for the email providers to keep up. Some is going to get through. Do your part to report spam that does get through to help them improve. You win in the end.
Beyond these measures, there are a few things that you can do on your own to cut down on the spam that you get. One thing that is very important is to protect your email address as if it were your phone number. Do not post it anywhere online, as programs out there look for email addresses to harvest for spam email lists. Do not use your personal email for filling out random forms or for signing up for web sites either. Get an email account just for those things and expect that it will get spammed. That is better than it coming into the ones you use each day.
You should also take care to never open spam, and to never, ever buy from such an email. Never click on a link to buy Viagra. Spam would not come if it did not work. If people keep buying, the emails will keep coming. You can always find another way to get what you want. Also, do not click to unsubscribe. You will not be taken off any lists. In fact, you are verifying that your address is active, and that means it is worth more money.
When spam is off the charts, you can see if you can find where some of it is coming from, though you may not have much luck. You can do this where you would go to search out and find an email address coming from any unknown source. Be prepared to come up empty most of the time, in regards to spam, but it never hurts to try.
